Organized Crime

So, you know how ever since we moved to New York I've been on the look-out for signs of organized crime? I mean, I watched a few seasons of The Sopranos. I've seen all of the Godfather movies. And then I moved to LONG ISLAND! Mob activity EVERYWHERE, right? I'm quite sure that organized crime is all around me.

Little did I know how close, though.

Oh yes, you must have the squirrel proof feeder. I find this type works best:

I will also stop large birds like blue jay's from eating all your seed in one day.

There are other types that spin around and fling the squirrel off, which can be quite entertaining, but I have heard stories of squirrels figuring them out.

there's a squirrel conspiracy to overthrow the world. a friend of mine is tracking it. she has a whole collection of articles about squirrels causing power outages and wildfires etc. I wish I wasn't serious.

I have the Yankee Flipper bird feeder by Droll Yankees. It's so fun to watch as it flips the squirrels off and sends them flying! They do NOT get hurt. I think you should get one and start taking videos. Seriously. I only charge a few cents per flip for the suggestion.

Cayenne pepper in the food--doesn't bother the birds but discourages the squirrels.

But really, if you're going to feed the birds you'll need an open line of credit at the feed store because those squirrels will figure out how to TAKE. IT. ALL.

I put up a bird feeder and the squirrels went into organized attack. Two days later the feeder was on the ground in the middle of the back yard and empty. The suet feeder disappeared entirely the first night, though I can't say it was a squirrel.

Squirrel mafia. Definitely. Watch your bird feeders, pumpkins, vegetable gardens and tulip bulbs. You might have to leave walnuts out for "insurance", ya know what I'm sayin'?

And if you see them wearing little sunglasses and Italian suits? Then you know you're in trouble.

Well, I don't particularly like squirrels but I will say, over the past couple of years, they have pulled up my tulip bulbs from non-sun-shiny places where the tulips refuse to blossom and replanted them for me in sunny places where the tulips bloom beautifully. And I don't have to slip them anything wrapped in a pound of Italian sausage, either!

I just got the latest version of that birdfeeder for Mother's Day and the screw to hang it up from the porch awning with last night. Mine has a green-wire scaffolding to accommodate, it says, both perching and clinging birds... We shall see! And I've never seen a squirrel on that awning, so hopefully it'll work.
