August 6, 2012 -- Heartsick

My heart is breaking for the members of the peaceful and devout American Sikh community.

I spent today wondering what the best response is to hatred and ignorance.

In the end, the only answer I have is to remain steadfast and sow whatever tiny bit of love and light I can wherever I can.

It's not much to hold a tiny candle in the face of what seems like overwhelming darkness, but I don't know what else turns the darkness away.

My son visited the Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar India just a couple weeks ago and chopped onions for the communual meal. I do not understand the evil narrowmindedness that would target such peaceful and charitable people.

You're making me think of the Yarn Harlot's recent post about knitters understanding that small things add up to big things.

You never know when your actions, no matter how small, will influence someone to change and cause a big difference. It goes along with the biblical imperative to always assume that the other person is Christ in disguise. And of course the Golden Rule applies, so keep holding out that small flame.

I always tell my kids that these horrific events make the news because they are not the norm.

Light and dark cannot coexist, so let's each hold our tiny flames, shall we?

I think many of us hold our tiny flames and try to make a better world. Sadly, when those flames aren't joined together to make a bigger fire, they rarely make much difference in the overall fight against the darkness. *sigh*

We can only add love to the mix, and hope it dilutes the hate, each of us, one at a time. I'm glad to be in the company of you and your friends.

So much violence. What are we teaching the next generation? It's awful that peace loving people were targeted, however it's so hard to shock me now. sad...sad...sad

I like what Miri said. And I admit that all this talk of "fire" had me weirded out for a moment. ;)
